We're coming up to five weeks now in UK Lockdown and to counteract the boredom we're bringing another edition of our top online resources and activities to do at home. This week we're focusing on all things art related. With some fantastic resources available from our nations beloved museums and artists. Suitable for all ages and especially for those home schooling.
1. TATE - ANDY WARHOL EXHIBITION GOES ONLINE
For those missing a weekend fix of art, fear not as you will be able to explore Tate's collections and current exhibitions online via a new series of online video tours.
The first film launches 6th April and provides viewers a unique insight into the recently opened Warhol Exhibition at the Tate Modern. It offers viewers a guided tour of the exhibition containing over 100 works from the iconic artist, delving into his extraordinary life, persona and ability to tap into counter culture and consumerism. On their website there is an incredible collection of podcasts, 'How To Tutorials' like this one below "How to Print Like Warhol". If you have kids, also check out the Tate Kids section "How to Make Pop Art Like Warhol" with beautiful illustrations by Rose Blake. If you like this activity, you will love the Meet the Artist activity book. It's sold out at the Tate, however still available to order via Amazon. Perfect to keep children entertained at home.
2. TATE BMW LIVE - FAUSTIN LINYEKULA
BMW Tate Live has become something of an annual highlight, so we were thrilled to see this poignant and resonant performance by Faustin Linyekula available via Tate YouTube. Curators Catherine Wood and Tamsin Hong state:
"As we face collective uncertainty, we are reminded of the endurance of the body through the work of these artists. Their work responds to the legacies of violence, isolation and fear by forging practices built on collaboration, trust and compassion."
My Body, My Archive is a performance re-invented due to its closure to the public. It combines segments of his works Sur les traces de Dinozord 2006, Statue of Loss 2014, Banataba 2017 and Congo 2019.
In this autobiographical performance, Linyekula questions ancient knowledge stored in the body against the relatively short written history found in books. Companions, dancers, actors and musicians accompany him in this journey, helping him to tell stories and reactivate collective and personal memories. In the current climate, his work, which explores themes of connection, community and fragility of the body, has added poignancy and resonance.
